Action by NHAI against congestion and unauthorized parking on National Highways Gujarati

New Delhi, 24 June 2026: Taking up a major initiative with an aim to strengthen road safety and ensure hassle-free vehicular movement on National Highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has stepped up efforts to prevent unauthorized parking and congestion on National Highway corridors across the country. This initiative is being undertaken in compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court and is a part of NHAI’s continued commitment towards building a safer, more efficient and user-friendly national highway infrastructure.

Unauthorized parking of vehicles, roadside collisions and uncontrolled activities on National Highways pose a major risk to road users and adversely affect traffic flow and safety. To meet these challenges, NHAI has identified 595 vulnerable spots of unauthorized parking (with longitude and latitude details) in various states and is working in close coordination with the state governments, district administrations and implementing agencies to remove unauthorized parking from the National Highways.

  • New law and formation of District Highway Safety Task Force

NHAI has taken concerted efforts to relieve pressure on National Highway corridors under the provisions of the Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002. To further strengthen institutional coordination, NHAI is working closely with State Governments to set up District Highway Safety Task Forces and appoint nodal officers to monitor compliance and facilitate inter-agency coordination. These mechanisms will support timely enforcement action and enable continuous monitoring of safety related issues on the National Highway Network.

Additionally, NHAI has directed its field offices to immediately audit all Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) installations and ensure that components such as traffic monitoring cameras, video incident detection systems, variable speed detection systems, variable message signboards and emergency call boxes are fully functional. Additionally, priority is being given to deployment of ambulances and recovery vehicles, increased highway patrolling, coordination of ATMS alerts with enforcement agencies and proactive maintenance of safety infrastructure to enable faster incident response, better enforcement and safe travel for National Highway users across the country. This initiative reflects NHAI’s commitment towards developing safer national highways by strengthening enforcement to ensure hassle-free movement of passengers and goods across the country.
