Adidas Layoffs In India: 300-350 Employees At Gurgaon Tech Hub Face Job Cuts

Adidas has begun a major round of layoffs at its India Tech Hub in Gurgaon, with around 300 to 350 employees reportedly facing job cuts, according to people familiar with the matter.

The workforce reduction was announced during a town hall meeting on Tuesday, September 15. The reported layoffs could affect nearly half of the tech hub’s workforce of around 700 employees.

Adidas confirmed the workforce reduction but did not disclose the exact number of employees affected. The German sportswear company described the decision as a difficult one, saying it was aimed at streamlining its operations and responding to the changing needs of its business and technology organisation.

People familiar with the development told Wocult that the affected employees include software engineers, data scientists and data engineers.

According to the report, employees affected by the layoffs have been divided into two groups.

One group received exit letters on September 15, the same day the workforce reduction was announced to employees. A second group is expected to remain with the company until December 15 to complete the transition and hand over responsibilities to colleagues.

Adidas India Tech Hub

Adidas launched its India Tech Hub in 2021 with the aim of attracting technology and engineering talent to work on the company’s products and digital capabilities.

Five years after its launch, the Gurgaon facility is undergoing a significant workforce reduction.

The reported cuts come as technology organisations globally continue to restructure operations and reassess workforce requirements amid changing business and technology needs.

Adidas Calls Layoffs A ‘Difficult Decision’

In a statement shared with Wocult, Adidas said the changes were part of efforts to align its operating model with the evolving requirements of the business.

The company said the restructuring is intended to simplify parts of its organisation, strengthen critical capabilities and support its long-term objectives.

Adidas also said it was committed to supporting affected employees with “care, respect, and appropriate transition assistance”.

Adidas Says India Remains Strategically Important

Despite the layoffs, Adidas said India remains a strategically important market for the company.

The company said its Technology Hub continues to play an important role in supporting its growth, innovation and digital transformation plans.

The reported layoffs therefore involve a reduction in roles within the technology organisation rather than an indication that Adidas is withdrawing its broader operations from India.
