After the Satya Niketan tragedy, the MCD in Delhi took major action, bulldozing 41 locations and sealing 61 properties.

New Delhi: After the incident in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, MCD’s campaign against illegal construction, dilapidated buildings and violation of building norms has intensified. Municipal Corporation teams are continuously monitoring and conducting operations in all 12 zones of the capital. Officials are visiting every house to check the condition of the buildings and if any defects are found, notices, sealing and demolition are being done. On Thursday, 41 locations were demolished, while 61 properties were sealed. Besides, show cause notices were issued to 32 properties and 3 demolition orders were also ordered.

After the Satya Niketan incident, a major campaign has been launched against dilapidated and leaning buildings in North Delhi’s Gandhi Vihar. An MCD investigation has declared 65 buildings in F-Block of Gandhi Vihar as dangerous. Many houses in this area lean to one side. Some buildings are only 5 inches to 2 feet apart. This has created an atmosphere of fear among local residents. For safety reasons, the administration has instructed residents to evacuate such dangerous buildings.

On Thursday, the MCD launched a major crackdown against illegal constructions in East, West and Central zones. In the East Zone, action was taken against illegal constructions in several areas including Khureji Khas, Jagatpuri and Lakshmi Nagar. In the western zone, demolitions were carried out in Paschim Puri, Madipur, Subhash Nagar, Som Bazar Road, Vipin Garden, Uttam Nagar, Bakkarwala Road, Nangli Vihar, Nihal Vihar and Nangloi. At the same time, action was taken against the G+5 building in Madanpur Khadar Extension of Madhya Zone. Here, 4 panels of the fifth floor were cut and then the entire building was sealed.

MCD also took major action in Kucha Mahajani jewelery market at Chandni Chowk. The municipal corporation team sealed the shops in the basements of various buildings. A total of 54 shops have been sealed here so far. Traders are angry with this action of MCD. He says the sealing proceedings are affecting his business. At many places in the capital, dilapidated buildings are being tackled with hammers and drill machines. Bulldozers are also being used in some areas. Buildings that are prone to accidents are being evacuated first and then sealed.
