AI Side Effects: Microsoft Corp co-founder Bill Gates has warned that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has so much power that it can destroy a large population of humans. They join a growing number of tech leaders and employees who are drawing attention to the existential threats associated with AI. Gates said in an interview given to NBC's 'Meet the Press' show that AI definitely has so much power that it can cause such incidents that can cause the death of billions of people. This interview is going to air this weekend. He said that there has never been a weapon as powerful as the combination created by people with bad intentions using the latest AI tools.
He said that as AI technology is rapidly improving, warnings have increased in Silicon Valley about the possibility of huge losses due to it. Jacob Coxon, an Anthropic PBC employee, quit his job earlier this month and accused his former employers – Anthropic and OpenAI – of gambling with our lives by racing towards super-intelligent AI. Another Anthropic employee said he thinks there is more than a 10 percent chance that AI will wipe out all humans in the next decade.
The pace of AI development may be slow
These statements have drawn mainstream attention to a long-running and controversial discussion in this area, leading to public demands for the industry to take more steps to protect its technology. Anthropic's chief executive officer Dario Amodei has since urged slowing down the pace of AI development. A proposal that was immediately supported by colleagues like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk.
Self-regulation is not enough
In the interview, Bill Gates said that just making rules on your own (self-regulation) is not enough. He said that you need to involve law enforcement agencies and politicians in the discussion about what security measures and surveillance should be like and this should be an important thing.
People with bad intentions can misuse
Bill Gates previously argued in an article in August that ill-intentioned people could use increasingly powerful AI tools to carry out cyber attacks, fraud, spread misinformation and cause massive damage against hospitals, financial institutions, power grids and government systems.
