Technology Desk: Airtel has launched satellite-to-mobile connectivity service in collaboration with SpaceX's Starlink. With the help of this service, essential mobile communication can be done even in such areas where normal mobile network is not available. Currently, this facility has been launched in Africa for some selected customers of Airtel Africa.
Eligible customers will get 30 days free trial of this service. For this, customers can register through MyAirtel app. Initially, low data facilities are being provided under the service.
Will be able to use WhatsApp and SMS
During the 30-day trial, eligible users will be able to use WhatsApp messaging and SMS. However, this facility will not have fast data service like normal mobile internet.
Airtel has currently prepared it for essential communication and low data tasks. The company has not announced to provide normal voice calling or full mobile broadband service under this offer.
The phone will connect directly to Starlink satellite
The most special thing about this service is that the user will not need Starlink dish, satellite phone or any separate device for connection. Supported smartphones will be able to connect directly to Starlink satellite.
However, for this the sky above the phone must be clear. If the user is inside a building or there is a large obstruction between the satellite and the phone, connectivity may be affected.
Available on select Android phones
Currently this feature is available only on select Android smartphones. Eligible Airtel Africa customers can register for the free trial through the MyAirtel app. For this, the terms and conditions set by the company will be applicable.
According to Airtel Africa, in areas where there is no normal mobile network coverage, customers will be able to use essential communication services when there is clear sky. The company has described it as Africa's first satellite-to-mobile service in DRC i.e. Democratic Republic of Congo.
Network reach can increase without mobile towers
The biggest benefits of satellite-to-mobile technology may be in remote areas. Building mobile towers and network infrastructure in sparsely populated or difficult geographical areas is costly and challenging.
In such areas, satellite can help in expanding the reach of mobile networks by connecting directly to smartphones. This can benefit farmers, health workers, relief and humanitarian organizations as well as people working in mining, transport and logistics sectors.
No alternative to existing mobile network
This service of Airtel is currently focused on providing backup connectivity in areas outside network coverage rather than completely replacing the normal mobile network. That is, where the signal of the mobile tower does not reach, the supported phone can connect to the essential messaging services through satellite.
