Doval said he was new to intelligence work and very young at the time. His responsibilities in Sikkim included monitoring the border areas, understanding PLA movements and gathering vital information about China.
Our team was once sent on a reconnaissance mission in the border area. As per the plan, our team would return after about five-six days. But even after five or six days, the team did not return. When Tim didn't come back, we started to worry. This concern was not only as an officer, but also for the safety of those on the mission. Shortly after, a call came from our headquarters. His senior officer informed him that Tim, who had been sent to the border area, had been detained by the Chinese authorities. But after many negotiations, agreements and many discussion meetings with China, the team members were sent back.
Doval thought his career was over
Doval said that after that incident, I started to think that my career was over. The matter was investigated, but the inquiry found no wrongdoing. But I was very sad because of that incident. This experience was difficult for me, because as an officer I was responsible for the mission and on the other hand, I was concerned about the safety of the people on the mission.

A life lesson from an elderly Tibetan Sherpa
“At that time we had an old Tibetan Sherpa working in the intelligence department with us,” Doval said. This Sherpa taught them a lesson about life. It's all like reading a map, he said. In life, some people read their map correctly, while others choose the wrong direction. This small incident taught me an important lesson about my life and career. His message was that every person has to make decisions from many situations and paths. Progress requires identifying the right direction and understanding the situation.
