Alphonso Davies becomes Bundesliga's record Canadian appearance-maker

Alphonso Davies Makes Bundesliga History, Breaks Canadian Appearance Record

Alphonso Davies has added another major milestone to his already impressive Bayern Munich career, becoming the Canadian player with the most appearances in Bundesliga history.

The 25-year-old Bayern Munich defender reached the landmark during Bayern’s Bundesliga clash with Union Berlin on September 18, 2026. The appearance took Davies to 171 Bundesliga matches, moving him past former Canadian international Paul Stalteri, who previously held the record with 170 appearances.

Davies Surpasses Paul Stalteri

Stalteri spent his Bundesliga career with two clubs. He made 151 appearances for Werder Bremen and another 19 for Borussia Mönchengladbach, giving him 170 games in Germany’s top flight.

Davies needed just one more appearance to take sole possession of the Canadian record, and he achieved it with Bayern against Union Berlin.

The milestone comes after Davies established himself as one of the most recognizable Canadian players in European football. He joined Bayern from Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019 at just 18 years old and has since become an important part of the German giants’ success.

Kevin McKenna Third on the Canadian List

Behind Davies and Stalteri is another Canadian defender, Kevin McKenna.

McKenna recorded 137 Bundesliga appearances, representing Energie Cottbus and Cologne during his time in Germany. He remains the only other Canadian player to have surpassed 100 Bundesliga appearances.

Davies’ record therefore places him at the top of a relatively small but notable group of Canadian players who have made a significant impact in Germany’s top division.

A Major Milestone in Davies’ Bayern Career

Davies’ latest Bundesliga appearance also added to his remarkable overall record with Bayern Munich. According to the Bundesliga, the Union Berlin match was his 256th appearance for Bayern across all competitions.

Since arriving at the club, Davies has won multiple Bundesliga titles and was part of Bayern’s 2019/20 UEFA Champions League-winning team. He has also contributed 16 goals and 41 assists for the club across competitions, according to Bundesliga figures.

The record-breaking appearance came in a memorable night for Bayern, who defeated Union Berlin 7-0. Davies also provided two assists during the emphatic victory, adding another strong performance to his historic evening.

With his new record now established, Davies continues to build on his legacy as one of the most successful Canadian footballers in Bundesliga history.
