Complete information about the meeting
The conversation took place on 21 and 22 June 2026 at Bürgenstock Resort, Switzerland. Earlier on June 17, US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had signed a 14-point agreement (MOU). That agreement stated a ceasefire for 60 days and keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.
Vice President JD Vance, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner attended the meeting from the US side. On behalf of Iran, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led the way. Qatar and Pakistan played a big role as mediators in this entire process.
What issues were discussed
- To implement a complete ceasefire in Lebanon.
- Returning Iran’s frozen assets.
- Preparing a draft to remove sanctions on Iranian oil exports.
- Ending Iran’s nuclear program and economic sanctions.
Causes and obstacles of stress
The atmosphere during the talks turned tense when President Trump threatened military action and imposing tolls on the Strait of Hormuz. This made the Iranian team very angry and at one point they walked out of the face-to-face talks. However, talks continued behind the scenes through Qatar and Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and Israeli air strikes in Lebanon also endangered the stability of this agreement.
