Originally established by Truman on January 1, 1947, the command has operated under the name USPACOM for more than 70 years and is the oldest and largest command among America’s unified combatant commands.
Trump changed this name during his first term
The US Pacific Command was renamed US Indo-Pacific Command in 2018 during the first term of US President Donald Trump. “Reinstating USPACOM’s old name honors the command’s deep historical roots and fosters pride and a sense of belonging among all who serve in the Pacific,” the Defense Department said.
“The USPACOM name reflects its decades of military heritage and regional partnerships – from playing a key role in establishing the regional security architecture after World War II to coordinating with joint forces during the Korean War, the Vietnam War and numerous humanitarian operations,” it said.
The largest command of the US Army
The statement said that USPAcom provides services from the waters off the west coast of the United States to the western border of India. The ministry said the command’s core mission and its commitment to maintaining a free and open space in collaboration with regional allies and partners remain unchanged. James Mattis, then US Defense Secretary, said in 2018 that it was renamed Indo-Pacific Command to recognize the growing connectivity between the Indian and Pacific oceans. Mattis said in 2018 that the command spans “from Bollywood to Hollywood and from penguins to polar bears” and plays a critical role in America’s national defense strategy.
