Lost both legs in bomb blast, still did not lose courage: Hari Buddha made world record by conquering seven summits

Nepal Mountaineer Hari Buddha Magar Story: For many people, losing both legs can be the biggest challenge of life, but Nepal’s Hari Buddha Magar made it not his weakness but his strength. Despite losing both legs in a bomb blast in Afghanistan, he created history by conquering the world’s most difficult mountain peaks.

Today, Hari Buddha Magar is the world’s first double amputee (lost both legs above the knees) mountaineer who has successfully climbed the Seven Summits i.e. the highest peaks of the seven continents.

Bomb blast in Afghanistan changed life

Born in an ordinary family of Nepal, Hari Buddha Magar grew up amidst the mountains since childhood. Later he made it to the prestigious Gorkha Regiment of the British Army. During his deployment in Afghanistan in 2010, his foot fell on an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) planted on the roadside. The explosion was so powerful that both his legs had to be amputated above the knees. This accident was the most difficult phase of his life, but instead of giving up, he decided to start life afresh.

The struggle started with a wheelchair

In the initial days after the accident, his only goal was to lift himself from the ground to the wheelchair. Gradually he strengthened himself physically and mentally. Hari, who dreamed of climbing Mount Everest since childhood, started mountaineering training with the help of artificial legs and moved towards the seemingly impossible goal.

Created history by conquering Mount Everest

In May 2023, Hari Buddha Magar created history by successfully climbing the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. He became the first person to reach the summit of Everest without losing both legs above the knees. This achievement made him an icon of inspiration across the world.

After Everest, Hari set his sights on completing the Seven Summits Mission, one of the world’s most prestigious mountaineering expeditions.

The mission covers the highest peaks of 7 continents:

  • Mount Everest (Asia)
  • Kilimanjaro (Africa)
  • Denali (North America)
  • Aconcagua (South America)
  • Vinson Massif (Antarctica)
  • Carstensz Pyramid (Oceania)
  • Elbrus/Mont Blanc (Europe)

In January 2026, he completed the Seven Summits Mission with the successful climb of Mount Vinson in Antarctica and created a new world record.

Five Guinness World Records in his name

Hari Buddha Crocodile now holds five Guinness World Records. These include records for climbing Everest, Denali and other difficult peaks as a double amputee mountaineer. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements, Guinness World Records has also honored him with the prestigious ‘ICON’ award.

‘Disability is not identity, courage is identity’

Hari says that his aim is not just to make records but to inspire people. According to him, disability does not define a person’s ability. He said that people told him many times that he could not do it, but he overcame every challenge with his hard work and determination.

Now keeping an eye on space and polar expeditions

Even after completing the Seven Summits mission, Hari does not want to stop. His dream now is to reach the North and South Pole, explore the depths of the ocean and, if possible, travel into space in the future. The story of Hari Buddha Crocodile is a living example of the fact that the greatest strength of a human being is not his body, but his confidence, courage and never-say-die spirit.
