American prisoner is on hunger strike in Tihar for 50 days, questions raised on Indian food; The matter reached the court

A new controversy has come to light regarding the diet of American citizen Van Dyke, lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. Van Dyke, who is lodged in a National Investigation Agency (NIA) case, has claimed that he is not able to eat the spicy and deep-fried food available in jail. For this reason, he is on hunger strike for the last 50 days and is consuming only liquid diet including soya milk.

Appeal for special food in court

The petition filed by Van Dyke states that the normal food in the Indian jail is not suitable for his health. According to the petition, whenever he tried to eat jail food, his health deteriorated and he had severe difficulty in digesting the food. Therefore, he has asked the court to provide him food as per his health needs.

During the hearing of the case, the jail administration asked for a week’s time to file its reply. Agreeing to this, the court fixed the next hearing of the case for July 21.

Accused of entering India from Mizoram border

The NIA had arrested Van Dyke along with six Ukrainian nationals on March 13. According to the investigating agency, all the accused had entered India illegally from Myanmar through Mizoram border and were later caught from various domestic airports in the country.

During investigation, the agency suspects that this group was active as mercenaries. He is accused of helping ethnic armed organizations operating in India and Myanmar and training them in drone operation. In this case, action has been taken against him under sections related to terrorist conspiracy including Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Van Dyke is the founder of ‘Sons of Liberty International’

Van Dyke is said to be the founder of a non-profit organization called ‘Sons of Liberty International’ (SOLI). The organization claims that it trained groups fighting against ISIS in Iraq and also provided assistance to Ukraine from the year 2022. Van Dyke says his organization works against dictatorial regimes.

However, the NIA alleges that this network is linked to militant organizations operating in the North-East of India. At present, the investigation of the case is going on and now the next hearing of the court will be on July 21, where the jail administration will present its side.
