What is Analog Paneer?
Regular paneer is made from milk. It contains nutrients like milk protein, fat and calcium. In contrast, analog cheese uses plant proteins and starches. Paneer in this form is sold in the market. It contains none of the nutrients found in regular cheese. There is no permission to sell this type of cheese. So when buying packaged foods, always read the ingredients and nutritional information on the back.
Which items have been banned by the Karnataka government?
A notification has been issued on 17th August 2026 under Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration Department. Including many other ingredients including analogue or non-dairy cheese.
- Production of analogue or non-dairy cheeses is banned.
- Processing and packaging of such products will also be prohibited.
- Storage and supply also cannot be done.
- Paneer cannot be put up for sale or offered to consumers under this name.
What foods are excluded from the ban”bullet-text”>The government has clarified that the ban will not apply to all dairy or food products. Products for which separate quality standards have been set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India i.e. FSSAI will not be covered by this order. This includes frozen desserts, processed cheeses, mixed fat spreads, other standardized food products.
