Congress targeted the government, not sharing the amendment bill is a mockery of democracy.
New Delhi. Congress has made serious allegations against the government regarding the Constitution Amendment Bill. The party says that the bill, which is proposed to be discussed in Parliament from April 16, has not been shared with the MPs yet, which is a blatant violation of the democratic process.
Congress communication department in-charge Jairam Ramesh issued a statement on Tuesday saying that this attitude of the government is arbitrary and it weakens the basic spirit of democracy. He alleged that the opposition’s demand for convening an all-party meeting on April 29 had already been rejected, which was an example of a unilateral decision.
Ramesh said that the Parliament session has been called at a time when the campaign for assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal is at its peak. Despite this, the government ignored the opposition’s demand to hold a meeting after the elections were over.
He also said that it is part of the democratic tradition to share the Constitution Amendment Bills which are to be debated and voted on in Parliament with the MPs in advance. But ‘even this morning’ copies of these bills have not been made available to the MPs, which is extremely worrying.
Taking aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress leader said that this situation reflects his ‘bulldozer mentality’, where unilateral decisions are being imposed instead of dialogue and consensus. Congress says that such steps not only hurt the dignity of Parliament but are also against democratic values. The party has demanded that the government immediately make a copy of the bill available to all MPs and ensure transparency, so that any decision can be taken only after a healthy debate.
