He will take oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of the state at 11 am on Wednesday.

Nitish Kumar resigns from the post of CM and dissolves the cabinet.

Before this, Nitish Kumar resigned from the post of Chief Minister of Bihar today itself. Nitish, who held the post of Chief Minister for almost 21 years during several tenures, went to Lok Bhavan and submitted his resignation to Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain.

Nitish, who had recently joined the Rajya Sabha, resigned from the post of CM and dissolved the cabinet. He issued an emotional statement on Twitter thanking everyone and said that the new government of Bihar will have their ‘full support and guidance’.

Overall, now with Samrat Chaudhary becoming the Chief Minister, a new phase is going to begin in the politics of Bihar, in which BJP will be seen directly taking charge of the power of the state for the first time. According to the report of the English newspaper Indian Express, this change is not just a change of leadership but is a sign of a major reshuffle in the power structure of the state. After NDA’s big victory in the assembly elections last year, Samrat Chaudhary was handed over the Home Department. This was the first time that this important ministry went to the BJP after two decades.

Samrat’s political journey: from RJD to BJP

Born in Lakhanpur village near Tarapur in Munger district, Samrat Chaudhary entered politics in 1990 with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). His father Shakuni Chaudhary has been a well-known leader and minister of regional politics. In 1999, Samrat Chaudhary was made the Agriculture Minister in the Rabri Devi government. Although he was not an MLA or MLC at that time. Then he had to resign due to dispute regarding age. After this, in 2000, he won the election from Parbatta seat and gradually became stronger in the party. By 2010, he became the party’s chief whip in the assembly.

Constantly increasing stature with party changes

In 2014, Samrat Choudhary, playing a big political gamble, left RJD and joined Janata Dal (United) and also brought many MLAs with him. During the tenure of Jitan Ram Manjhi as Chief Minister, he was made the Urban Development Minister. Then he joined BJP in 2017 and quickly rose up in the organization. In 2023, he was made the state president of Bihar BJP.

Controversy and allegations

However, Samrat Chaudhary’s political career has also been controversial and his name was also linked to the Tarapur incident of 1995, in which Congress candidate Sachchidanand Singh was killed in a grenade attack. However, due to lack of evidence he was declared free from charges. During the recent elections, Prashant Kishore made allegations against him like hiding his age, which Choudhary rejected. He also said that the court never accepted his claim of considering him a minor.

BJP’s strategy and future

Overall, the rise of Samrat Chaudhary is being considered a part of the BJP’s strategy, under which the party wants to strengthen the OBC vote bank. He comes from the Koeri community, which plays an important role in the politics of Bihar.

After Nitish Kumar returned to NDA in the year 2024, Chaudhary was made the Deputy Chief Minister and was given many important departments including finance. In the 2025 assembly elections, he registered a big victory from Tarapur seat. The responsibility of the Home Ministry and now his coronation as the leader of the legislative party indicates that the BJP is grooming him as a big leader in the state politics.
