Big discovery in Mahasamund of Chhattisgarh, 5 high quality diamonds found in scientific investigation

New Delhi. During scientific exploration conducted in Baloda Belmundi Diamond Block of Saraipali area in Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, five high quality diamonds have been recovered whose total weight is about 1.22 carats.

NMDC-CMDC Limited, a joint company of National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) and Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation (CMDC), has officially confirmed the discovery late on Monday evening.

The company has said that five diamonds have been obtained from processing 200 tonnes of mineral material in Baloda Belmundi Diamond Block. The total weight of these diamonds is 1.22 carats. Experts are considering this as an important achievement, because it has further strengthened the possibilities of finding large reserves of diamonds in the area.

According to the company, the potential diamond zone was identified after stream sediment sampling, geophysical survey and 500 meter deep exploratory drilling in the area.

On the basis of this, 200 tonnes of material was sent to the Diamond Processing Plant located in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, where five diamonds were found during investigation. The company has confirmed this in an official letter issued on June 22.

It has also been told in the letter that NMDC-CMDC Limited does not have the arrangement to keep the diamonds safe, hence all the 5 diamonds have been safely deposited in the strong room of NMDC located in Panna.

According to the company, these five diamonds include two gem quality white diamonds, which weigh 0.19 and 0.06 carats and are much better than normal diamonds. Apart from this, one yellow colored diamond weighing 0.32 carat and two brown colored diamonds weighing 0.59 and 0.06 carat were found.

Mineral experts say that the discovery of gem quality diamonds at this early stage is an extremely positive sign and indicates the potential for further large-scale diamond reserves in the area.

Experts say that this discovery can make Chhattisgarh among the major diamond producing states of the country in the coming years.

Gem quality diamonds are of the best quality. These are used for making jewelery and their price is very high. These have good shine, transparency and better color. Non-gem diamonds are for industrial purposes (such as cutting tools).

Experts believe that identification of any new diamond field starts with small samples only. Therefore, this discovery of five diamonds may seem small in number but from geological point of view its importance is very big. This could open the way for more detailed survey and possible commercial mining in the future.

India is the world’s largest diamond cutting and polishing hub but is still heavily dependent on imports for rough diamonds. Such discovery in Chhattisgarh can give new impetus to the goal of self-reliant India. Once successful commercial mining starts, there is expected to be a significant increase in investment, employment and revenue in the state.

Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai said on this achievement that the discovery of diamonds in Mahasamund is an important achievement for Chhattisgarh. This discovery underlines the rich mineral wealth of the state and opens doors to new possibilities of development, investment and employment.
