Big decision of NPPA, retail price of 39 essential medicines fixed

New Delhi. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has fixed the maximum retail price of 39 medicines used in the treatment of various diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease. This decision has been taken under the provisions of the Drugs Order, 2013.

According to the notification of NPPA, these medicines will not be sold at a price higher than the maximum retail price prescribed. The objective of the authority is to provide essential medicines to the patients at affordable rates and reduce the financial burden of treatment. These drugs include many drug formulations used in the treatment of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, cholesterol-related diseases and other common health problems. The new prices have become effective as soon as the notification is issued.

The retail price of Amlodipine and Telmisart tablets has been fixed at Rs 14.74 per tablet. The price of Nepafenac, an ophthalmic solution drug used after eye surgery and in the treatment of bacterial infections, has been fixed at Rs 68.64 per ml. The price of the medicine given to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke has been fixed at Rs 6.37 per capsule. The prices of many fixed dose combination medicines used in the treatment of diabetes have also been fixed in the list.

NPPA has once again clarified that it is mandatory for all retailers and dealers to clearly display the price list issued by the manufacturing companies in their shops. Citing Para 24 (4) of the DPCO 2013, the authority said that every retailer and dealer must display the price list and supplementary price list in such a part of his shop from where it can be easily seen and known by any customer.
