Baghdad. US and Saudi Arabian forces have attacked Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Iraq. These forces have the support of Iran.
This integrated military action has been taken in response to drone attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities over the past 30 days. The US has also claimed that Iran has fired ballistic missiles at one of its bases in Jordan before the integrated military action.
According to Al Jazeera report, fires broke out in several places in Iraq’s northern Nineveh province and southern Basra province after the attack by American and Saudi forces. A large number of firefighters arrived in Basra after the attack.
The PMF has acknowledged that its headquarters across Iraq were targeted in joint attacks by the US and Saudi Arabia. At least eight people have been killed and four others injured in Nineveh.
Yemen’s Iran-backed terrorist group Houthi has condemned the attack on PMF. Houthi said in a statement released on Al-Masirah TV that this is an open attack on Iraq’s sovereignty.
Importantly, the Popular Mobilization Forces are the official government security forces of Iraq. It was established on June 15, 2014 by merging Iran-backed Shia militia groups.
In words, this PMF works in coordination with the Iraqi Prime Minister and the Defense Ministry, but in practice, it is considered to be deeply influenced by Iran.
