New Delhi. On August 21, people associated with ‘Removal of Reservation Movement’ (RHA) demonstrated against the caste-based reservation system at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. During this, a large number of people reached the spot and raised slogans against reservation. Police detained many protesters.
The main demand of the protesters was that priority should be given to economic basis instead of caste in determining eligibility for government schemes and reservation. During the demonstration, many people arrived with banners, posters and saffron flags.
Police did not give permission for demonstration at Jantar Mantar
According to Delhi Police, permission was not given for any kind of protest, procession or gathering at Jantar Mantar. Keeping in view the security arrangements, a large number of police and paramilitary forces were deployed in the area. Besides, barricading was also done to control the movement of people. The police had also warned of legal action against those spreading misinformation regarding the protest.
Permission was given for Ramlila Maidan
According to the police, the NOC was issued at Ramlila Maidan for a peaceful protest under the banner of ‘Remove Reservation Movement’. In this, a maximum of 500 people were allowed to gather till 4 pm. The police clarified that from law and order point of view it had no objection to the demonstration at Ramlila Maidan.
It was told that people were mobilized through social media for the demonstration at Jantar Mantar. After the protesters arrived, police increased security and detained several people to control the situation.
