What does Arnab mean?
The name ‘Arnab’ (which means ‘ocean’ in Bengali) was included by Bangladesh in the list of regional tropical cyclone names managed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Cyclonic storm will be active in next 12 hours
According to the Meteorological Department, this deep depression was currently located about 200 km south-east of Gopalpur (Odisha), 200 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 210 km south of Puri (Odisha) and 290 km east of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). “It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and turn into a deep depression over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during next 12 hours,” the IMD said.
Along with this, IMD said that this system is expected to keep moving towards west-northwest. The IMD has said that it is very likely to cross north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur as a ‘deep depression’ between the night of September 23 and the morning of September 24 (i.e. Wednesday and Thursday).
Schools closed in Odisha
IMD has predicted the formation of a ‘deep depression’ (deep low pressure area) in the Bay of Bengal, which may cause heavy rains in the state in the next two days. In view of this, schools and Anganwadi centers have been closed in four districts of Odisha. IMD scientists have warned that heavy rains may increase the water level of rivers and cause flooding in low-lying areas, especially in places where there are already continuous rains.
