On the occasion of World Lion Day 2026, Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav celebrated India’s remarkable journey in lion conservation. He also reiterated the country’s unwavering commitment to protecting wildlife and biodiversity. In a social media post, the Minister informed that the population of Asiatic lions has increased from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025. He attributed this achievement to the dedication of forest officials, conservationists, local communities and all those working tirelessly to protect this magnificent species.
Bhupendra Yadav said that India’s success in conserving Asiatic lions is a proud testament to the country’s commitment to wildlife and biodiversity. He reiterated the resolve to protect India’s natural heritage and ensure that the roar of Asiatic lions continues to resonate for generations to come. On this occasion, Union Minister of State (EFCC) Kirti Vardhan Singh said in a social media post that by protecting critical habitats, strengthening conservation programmes and promoting coexistence, India has shown the world that development and nature can thrive together.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ‘Project Lion’ on August 15, 2020 to ensure the long-term conservation of this big cat. Currently, the range of lions has increased from about 30,000 square kilometers in 2010 to about 35,000 square kilometers. The project adopts a comprehensive and holistic approach to biodiversity conservation. It emphasizes habitat improvement, disease surveillance and veterinary support, scientific population monitoring, technology-assisted interventions, biodiversity conservation, benefit sharing and community participation.
