Assam Assembly Election Hot Seats: Now only a few hours are left for the results of Assam Assembly elections. Before this, the eyes of the entire country are fixed on the election results of five states including Assam. This time in Assam, BJP is looking for the third consecutive term under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Whereas Congress is trying to regain its lost ground under the leadership of Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi. This time the contest is between the BJP-led NDA and the divided opposition.

Most of the exit polls that came before the election results have predicted a clear majority for the ruling government led by Sarma. Apart from the main battle, many assembly seats are expected to have a close contest due to narrow margins.

This time’s hot seats

1) Jalukbari

Jalukbari constituency, represented by Himanta Biswa Sarma, falls in the Kamrup district of Assam and falls in the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency. This seat includes Jalukbari area as well as some parts of Guwahati city.
In the 2021 assembly elections, Himanta Sarma from BJP won the seat by getting 1,30,762 votes and secured around 73.52% vote share. Sarma had defeated Roman Chandra Borthakur of Congress by a margin of 92,677 votes. He had earlier contested from this seat in 2011 as a Congress candidate.

2) Jorhat

Jorhat assembly seat is a hot seat in itself because Gaurav Gogoi of Congress is the MP from here. There were 1,86,273 registered voters in the 2021 Assam Assembly elections in this hotly contested seat, with 1,39,896 valid votes cast. In that election, BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami won the seat with 68,321 votes.
Congress’s Rana Gogoi came second with 61,833 votes and lost by a margin of 6,488 votes. In the 2016 assembly elections, this seat had 1,63,793 voters and a total of 1,30,809 votes. Hitendra Nath Goswami retained the seat by defeating Rana Goswami, who received 55,571 votes, and the victory margin was 13,638 votes.

3) Nazira

Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia is contesting once again from Nazira Assembly seat in Sivasagar district, which is a traditional seat associated with his family. His father, former Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia, and his mother Hemoprava Saikia, both have previously represented the seat.
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, Nazira had 1,33,974 registered voters, with 1,10,158 valid votes cast. Congress’s Debabrata Saikia won the seat by defeating BJP’s Mayur Borgohain, who had received 51,704 votes, with a victory margin of just 683 votes.

4) Barchalla

Former Rajya Sabha MP and former state Congress president Ripun Bora is back in the election contest from Barachalla assembly constituency in Sonitpur district of Assam. His past experience as a minister and MLA makes his candidature important on this seat, which falls within the Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency. Borchalla (No. 72) is a general category constituency covering the rural areas around Borchalla, which has a mix of Assamese, Bodo and Bengali speaking communities in an agricultural environment.

BJP’s Ganesh Kumar Limbu is the MLA from this seat since 2016. In the 2021 assembly elections, he secured 70,569 votes with 52% vote share and defeated Congress’s Ram Prasad Sarma by a margin of 17,782 votes.

5) Golaghat

Golaghat Assembly constituency is a general category seat located in Golaghat district of Assam. After the final delimitation exercise notified in August 2023, the constituency has been placed under the newly formed Kaziranga Lok Sabha constituency. Earlier, it was part of the now defunct Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency.

In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, Golaghat had 2,05,586 registered voters, with 1,61,284 valid votes cast. BJP’s Ajanta Neog won the seat with 81,651 votes, while Congress’s Bidupan Saikia came second with 72,326 votes and lost by a margin of 9,325 votes.
