Guwahati. Amid the severe floods in Assam, the state government has rapidly started implementing the relief measures announced for the affected families (Assam Flood Relief Package 2026). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has clarified that the government is providing immediate relief and rehabilitation assistance at the ground level, so that the flood victims can get their dues in time. According to the administration, more than 1.68 lakh people have been affected by the floods in 15 districts of the state. Amidst the relief and rescue operations, the government has given a major update regarding the assessment of damage and financial assistance.

Damage assessment will begin from August 9.

Assam Flood Relief Package 2026: According to the government announcement, a detailed assessment of the damage caused in the flood-affected areas will begin from August 9, so that assistance can be provided to the right and eligible beneficiaries.

Highlights of the relief package:

  • Interim Financial Assistance: Each eligible family will receive a cash assistance of ₹15,000 to meet immediate needs.
    Orunodoi Scheme: The benefit under this scheme has been increased to ₹2,500 for one month. Families in the worst-affected districts (Sibsagar and Charaideo) will receive an additional ₹10,000.
    Compensation to the next of kin: The families of those who lost their lives in the floods will receive an ex-gratia amount of ₹4 lakh (Assam Flood Relief Package 2026) without the need for a post-mortem report. Additionally, an additional ₹5 lakh will be provided from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
  • Loan and bill relief: The government has announced a six-month moratorium on loan repayments, an extension in the loan repayment period, and a complete waiver of electricity bills and land revenue (treasury) for affected individuals.
  • Infrastructure and Religious Places: Special assistance will be provided for the reconstruction of damaged Anganwadi centres and Namghars, with Rs 1.5 lakh fixed for each damaged Namghar.
  • Assistance for Students: To minimize disruption to education, affected students will receive free replacement textbooks, re-provided school uniforms, and duplicate copies of required certificates. The state government is currently engaged in relief and rescue operations through camps and distribution centers in flood-affected areas.
