The devastating flood situation across Assam is finally showing signs of marginal improvement, though the human cost of the disaster continues to rise. While floodwaters have begun to recede in several parts of the state, bringing down the total number of affected citizens to just over 1.22 lakh, the tragedy has claimed more lives. Recent data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirms that the ongoing deluge has now pushed the state’s death toll to 89.
Fresh Casualties Push Death Toll Higher
According to the latest evening bulletin issued by the ASDMA, two more individuals tragically lost their lives to the floodwaters over the past 24 hours. These fresh fatalities were reported from the heavily impacted districts of Sivasagar and Golaghat, which heartbreakingly included a young boy who drowned in the surging waters. With these recent incidents, the total number of lives lost to this year’s relentless monsoon fury has reached 89.
Sivasagar Remains the Worst Hit
While the overall affected population has dipped significantly from 1.28 lakh on Monday to roughly 1.22 lakh people, five major districts are still bearing the brunt of the disaster. Sivasagar currently stands as the worst-hit region, with nearly 60,000 residents struggling against the inundation. Other severely affected districts include Charaideo with over 31,000 impacted people, followed closely by Jorhat, Golaghat, and Dhemaji.
The scale of the agricultural and infrastructural damage remains massive. Across the state, 365 villages are still completely submerged under floodwaters. Furthermore, an estimated 15,342 hectares of crucial crop areas have been devastated. Critical infrastructure, including embankments, roads, and bridges, has suffered widespread damage in multiple districts. Even wildlife and agriculture have taken a massive hit, with over 26,500 domestic animals and poultry affected by the current wave of floods.
To compound the challenges, river water levels remain a significant threat. Authorities have noted that the Dhansiri River is currently flowing above the official danger mark at Numaligarh, keeping local emergency response teams on high alert.
Extensive Relief and Rescue Operations Underway
To support the displaced population, the state administration is currently operating 55 active relief camps and localised relief distribution centres across four primary districts. These safe havens are currently taking care of 17,857 individuals who have been forced to flee their inundated homes.
The government has massively ramped up the distribution of essential supplies. Over the last 24 hours alone, authorities have successfully distributed nearly 100 quintals of rice, alongside substantial quantities of dal, salt, and over 600 litres of mustard oil to ensure that flood victims have access to basic nutrition and necessities.
The disaster has also drawn attention and support from across the nation. Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda recently won the internet’s praise after videos surfaced showing him wading through knee-deep water to deliver rations and assist flood-hit families in the state personally.
