Guwahati, Read. Along with providing relief to the families affected by the frequent floods in Assam, the state government is now preparing a comprehensive rehabilitation plan. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at the 80th Independence Day celebrations on Saturday that the government's focus goes beyond immediate relief to rehabilitation, reconstruction and strengthening the capacity to deal with future floods.
Reconstruction will be faster through digital assessment
The Chief Minister said that digital assessment of the damage caused by floods will be done rapidly. This will help speed up the reconstruction process and provide assistance to affected families without unnecessary delay. The government is trying to provide necessary resources to the flood affected people to resume normal life.
Help will be available from home to livestock and business
The proposed rehabilitation package will also include assistance for repairing damaged houses and restoring livelihoods. Eligible families will be provided assistance to restart livestock, poultry, tube wells, looms and textile industries that were destroyed or damaged in the floods.
There will be extension in repayment of loan also
To reduce the immediate financial burden on flood affected families, the government will make arrangements to provide moratorium in loan repayment. The Chief Minister said that this will give additional time to the affected families to rebuild their livelihood.
Government also focuses on children's education
Sarma said that rehabilitation will not be limited to just houses and livelihoods. Assistance will also be provided to schools and students affected by floods, so that children's education is not disrupted due to natural disaster and their future is not adversely affected.
Flood management will be strengthened with modern technology
The Chief Minister said that modern technology, strong infrastructure and better early warning system will play an important role in the long-term flood management strategy of Assam. Reliable forecast and timely warning will help people and administration to prepare before floods. He said that the government is not limited to just relief but is working rapidly to bring every flood affected family back to normal life.
