German luxury car company Audi is considering local production of electric cars in India. The company aims to double its share in the luxury car market to 15-16 percent in the next three to five years. Audi India brand director Balbir Singh Dhillon said the company’s strategy rests on three key pillars: focusing on customer needs, launching new products and expanding its dealership network.
The company currently has around 8 percent share in the luxury car market. The German auto company also plans to introduce more models in India taking advantage of the proposed Indo-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The company hopes to assess the demand and sales potential of these models in the Indian market before deciding on local production.
Balbir Singh Dhillon said, “We are looking to launch a locally manufactured battery electric car. A decision on this is expected in the next few months.” He added, “Our target is to double our market share in the next 3-5 years. Our strategy of focusing on customers, launching new products and expanding our network is expected to help us achieve this target.”
According to Audi India brand director Dhillon, the proposed India-EU FTA could provide an opportunity for the company to introduce new models in India at more competitive import tariffs and explore their sales potential. Dhillon said the company would continue to manufacture its flagship models locally, while imports could widen the range of models available to Indian customers.
