Azam silent, Naseemuddin weak; Will Owaisi become the new face of Muslim politics?
A new discussion has started regarding Muslim leadership in the politics of Uttar Pradesh. At one time, leaders like Samajwadi Party’s senior leader Azam Khan and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) strategist Naseemuddin Siddiqui were counted among the most influential faces of Muslim politics, but the changing political situation has changed the face of Muslim politics in the state. In such a situation, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi is trying to establish himself as the new political voice of the Muslim society.
Azam Khan, a 9-time MLA from Rampur, was a big face of Samajwadi Party and Muslim politics for a long time. He had political recognition in the entire state, from Western Uttar Pradesh, but in the last few years, his activism has become quite limited due to legal matters and prison related circumstances. Now even in SP, there is no such Muslim leader who has a state-wide hold like Azam Khan.
Naseemuddin’s long political journey but his influence is decreasing
Naseemuddin Siddiqui was once counted among the most trusted leaders of BSP supremo Mayawati. He was considered to have played an important role in achieving Dalit-Muslim equation. However, after parting ways with BSP, he joined Congress and later joined Samajwadi Party. Due to frequent party changes, his political hold and influence was not the same as before. Political analysts believe that his strength during the BSP era is no longer visible.

Owaisi is seeing a big political opportunity
Owaisi sees a political opportunity in Uttar Pradesh amid Azam Khan’s limited activism and Naseemuddin Siddiqui’s declining influence. By starting the election campaign from Bahraich, he has clearly indicated that AIMIM is not only working on the strategy of contesting elections but also making a permanent place in the politics of the state. Owaisi is continuously talking about the political participation of Muslim society. Along with this, he is also trying to connect Dalits and backward classes. Political experts believe that his focus is on those voters who consider themselves angry at not getting adequate representation in mainstream parties.
The bulk of Muslim votes in UP has traditionally been with the Samajwadi Party. In such a situation, if AIMIM is successful in building a strong organization in some areas, then it can have a direct impact on the vote bank of SP. Especially in many seats of Purvanchal, Terai and Western UP, Owaisi’s activism can create new equations.

This question is the most discussed before the 2027 elections. Owaisi’s national identity is strong, but to become a big leader in Uttar Pradesh, he will need both electoral success and a strong organization. At present, he is continuously touring the state and trying to increase his penetration among Muslim youth as well as Dalit and backward classes.
At one time Azam Khan and Naseemuddin Siddiqui were the biggest names in Muslim politics of UP, but today the circumstances have changed. In such a situation, Owaisi is trying to fill that vacant political space. Now it remains to be seen whether he remains limited to election discussions only or actually emerges as the new center of Muslim politics of Uttar Pradesh. The 2027 assembly elections will give the biggest answer to this question.
