Bali lawmaker proposes $60 tourist fee including insurance, healthcare

A Bali lawmaker has proposed charging foreign tourists around Rp1 million (US$60) per person for a package covering health and accident insurance and access to healthcare services.

Ida Gede Komang Kresna Budi, deputy speaker of the provincial legislature, made the suggestion during a discussion with Governor Wayan Koster on Oct. 29, Bali News reported.

He said tourists should get clear benefits for the fees they pay, and called for a review of repeated entrance charges at individual attractions to reduce the burden on visitors, according to Bali Tribune.

If his proposal is accepted, a centralized payment and visitor service facility would be established near the Patung Kuda area outside Ngurah Rai International Airport to offer cultural performances and welcome drinks.

The proposed package would also provide access to Bali Mandara Hospital and other international-standard medical facilities, Bali News reported.

Kresna Budi also called for transparent distribution of revenues to support tourism facilities across Bali.

Speaking during a discussion with Governor Koster on Oct. 29, he said improving hospitality was an investment in Bali’s reputation and tourism brand, adding that better service quality would boost visitor numbers, regional revenue and tourism workers’ wages.

Foreign tourists currently pay a Rp150,000 ($9) levy under Bali’s tourist tax scheme, according to the provincial government’s Love Bali platform.
