Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin resigns, there was uproar over Sheikh Hasina’s phone call

New Delhi. Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned. This information was given by his colleague. There were still about two years left in his tenure, but in the last few days, discussions about his resignation had gained momentum.

What was the reason for resignation?

Asked about the reason for his resignation, the 76-year-old leader told The Daily Star newspaper that he was suffering from health problems. A Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson told PTI that Shahabuddin’s representatives have left his office for Parliament with his resignation letter. The resignation letter will be submitted to Parliamentary Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed, who will act as acting President until a new President is elected as per the Constitution of Bangladesh.

At the same time, Bangladeshi media reports and independent revelations have surfaced the name of Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani as a possible successor to the top post. President Mohammed Shahabuddin was elected for a five-year term in April 2023. After the student movement in July-August 2024, the Awami League government of the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power. Sheikh Hasina came to India on 5 August 2024 and has been living here since then. Even after that political change, Shahabuddin was the only top official to remain in his constitutional post.

Who is Mohammad Shahabuddin?

Mohammad Shahabuddin was born in northwestern Pabna district. He was a leader of the student and youth wing of the Awami League in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Not only this, Shahabuddin also participated in the Liberation War of 1971 and was imprisoned for protesting after the assassination of Bangladesh’s founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with his family members in a military coup on August 15, 1975.

The Awami League government also fell due to that coup. Later in 1982, he joined the judicial service of the country. Later, when the Awami League returned to power in the 1996 elections, Shahabuddin served as the coordinator of the investigation team into the Bangabandhu murder case. Later he entered politics. After entering politics, he became a member of the Awami League Advisory Council.
