Ben Stokes Plans To Become England Head Coach: Former England Test captain Ben Stokes has revealed his plans for his post-cricket career, saying he wants to become the head coach of the England cricket team in the future. Stokes stated that he is currently completing a Level 3 coaching qualification so that he can take on a coaching role without delay after retirement. He also made a significant statement regarding England’s Test captaincy, questioning Harry Brook’s decision not to be appointed captain, while also expressing his support for Joe Root.
Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket during the third Test against New Zealand last month. Since then, he has been playing domestic cricket and completing his coaching studies. He stated that he wants to remain involved in cricket for a long time, and coaching is his next goal.
What did Ben Stokes say?
Stokes said, “I’m currently pursuing my Level 3 coaching course while playing because when my playing career ends, I want to have all my coaching skills completed. I know what I want to do next. I want to be a coach, and if I get the opportunity to coach the England team one day, I would be thrilled. I’ve always enjoyed leadership roles, both on and off the field.”
Questions raised about Joe Root
Following Stokes’ retirement, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) appointed Joe Root as Test captain, replacing Harry Brook. Brook was the vice-captain at the time and was expected to assume the captaincy. Previously, Joe Root led the team in Stokes’ absence in the second Test against New Zealand and was later appointed the permanent captain.
Ben Stokes admitted that he had hoped Harry Brook would take over the captaincy. He said he understands the board’s decision, but it sends the wrong message to Brook. He said, “If you believe a player can be a good captain or leader, then he should be given responsibility. I understand the decision, but I wondered what message this sends to Brook? He’s the vice-captain, the captain isn’t available, yet he wasn’t made captain. This was a bit surprising.”
Joe Root, who always puts the team before himself, Stokes
Joe Root previously captained the England Test team from 2017 to 2022. Under his leadership, England won 27 of 65 Test matches. Now, he will be leading the Test team for the second time. Stephen Fleming will be the new head coach of the Test team.

Stokes, however, supported Joe Root’s captaincy, saying his only concern is that the pressure of captaincy doesn’t affect his performance again. He said, “Joe always puts the team before himself. That’s my biggest concern because I saw the pressure on him last time he captained. I don’t want that to happen to him again because I care deeply for him. But I wish him all the best in this new responsibility and hope he succeeds.”
