Bergson hat-trick helps Malaysia thrash Singapore 6-0, but fall short of final

Bergson da Silva opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the eighth minute after VAR confirmed that Ryhan Stewart had pulled back Fergus Tierney inside the box.

Malaysia continued to press and doubled their lead in the 26th minute. Manuel Hidalgo made a solo run down the left, dribbled past several defenders and found Stuart Wilkin, who tapped the ball into an open net for his eighth international goal.

Singapore had chances to respond, with Song Ui-young forcing a save from goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi in the 15th minute, but Malaysia maintained control. By halftime, Indonesia had built a 6-1 lead over Bangladesh, putting pressure on Malaysia to score more.

Bergson doubled his tally in the 62nd minute after Aiman won possession on the right and crossed for him to finish from close range. Malaysia then introduced Paulo Josue for Tierney in the 68th minute as they continued their search for more goals.

Josue made an immediate impact, scoring from a narrow angle on the right in the 76th minute to put Malaysia 4-0 ahead and level them with Indonesia on goal difference.

Syahir Bashah added a fifth goal in the 87th minute after breaking the offside trap. The referee checked the goal with VAR before allowing it to stand.

Bergson completed his hat-trick in the fourth minute of stoppage time with an unstoppable strike, giving Malaysia a 6-0 victory.

However, Indonesia scored their seventh goal against Bangladesh shortly before full time, moving ahead of Malaysia on goals scored after the teams finished level on seven points and goal difference. Indonesia eventually won 9-2.

Malaysia’s emphatic victory therefore secured second place in Group A, despite their six-goal margin and Bergson’s hat-trick.
