A family, a son-in-law who cracked 5 IPS and 2 UPSC; Interesting story of Shukla family of Bhopal
Madhya Pradesh government has appointed Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Mini Shukla to the post of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-2) in Bhopal. After this order issued on June 5, 2026, the Shukla family has once again come into discussion. The reason for this is not only the new responsibility of Mini Shukla, but also the unique family legacy, which has prepared not one or two but five IPS officers to serve the country.
This story, which started from Mehgaon in Bhind district, has today become an example of inspiration. In the family of freedom fighter and advocate Baburam Shukla, there was such a passion for khaki uniform that this tradition continued for three generations. Grandfather’s dream was carried forward by the granddaughters and today both Mini Shukla and her elder sister Priyanka Shukla are serving as IPS officers.
When did this series start?
The process of becoming an IPS officer in the Shukla family started with former ADGP S.S. Started from Shukla. It is said that about 56 years ago, after seeing the then Superintendent of Police of Bhind, his desire to become a police officer was aroused in his mind. In the year 1970, he appeared for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, but did not get success. After this he passed the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) examination and joined the police service as DSP in 1971. Later, his dream of becoming an IPS was also fulfilled through promotion. In his long career, he served as Superintendent of Police in several districts of Madhya Pradesh and eventually retired as ADGP.
Son and daughter-in-law also became IPS
This passion for police service continued in the second generation of the Shukla family also. S.S. Shukla’s brother and retired Chief Medical Officer Dr. O.P. Shukla’s son Shashikant Shukla and his wife Monica Shukla also made their career in police service. Both of them entered the police department through state service and later became IPS officers. Presently both are serving as DIG rank officers. In this way, there is an example of a successful IPS couple in the family.
Granddaughters also became IPS
In the third generation of the family, Mini Shukla and Priyanka Shukla carried forward their grandfather’s legacy. Both the sisters succeeded in the UPSC examination and got a place in the Indian Police Service. Mini and Priyanka’s father Krishnakant Shukla told that the entire family had come to Gwalior from Bhind for better education of the children. During the same time his father S.S. Shukla was posted in Gwalior and often used to come to meet his grandchildren.
Mini Shukla succeeded in the third attempt
IPS officer Mini Shukla of 2022 batch of Madhya Pradesh cadre had secured All India 96th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2021. He prepared for the Civil Services Examination by staying at the Residential Coaching Academy of Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi.
Interestingly, Mini Shukla got success in the third attempt. She had passed the preliminary examination in the first attempt, whereas in the second attempt she could not even clear the prelims. On the basis of continuous hard work and determination, he achieved success in the third attempt.
IAS officer husband
Mini Shukla was married to IAS officer Sumit Pandey on 5 February 2026. Sumit Pandey, resident of Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, is an IAS officer of 2021 batch and is currently working as ADM in Bhopal.
IPS officer elder sister
Mini Shukla’s elder sister Priyanka Shukla is a 2019 batch IPS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre. In his career, he has worked on important positions like ASP, Police Station Incharge and Bargi CSP in Jabalpur. After serving as DCP of Bhopal Zone-1, he is currently posted at the Police Headquarters.
The achievements of the Shukla family are not limited to IPS officers only. Two sons-in-law of the family have also achieved success in the UPSC examination. Priyanka Shukla’s husband Pramod Tiwari is an Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer. Pramod Tiwari, resident of Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, is currently working on the post of DOM (Goods) in Bhopal.
