Keeping in mind the grand organization of the upcoming 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit in the national capital Delhi and the unprecedented security arrangements, the Central and Delhi governments have taken a major administrative decision. On the instructions of the Ministry of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Government of India and the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, the General Administration Department has issued an official notification declaring 11 September 2026 (Friday) as a public holiday in Delhi. Since September 11 is a Friday and immediately followed by the weekend of September 12 (Saturday) and September 13 (Sunday), government employees and lakhs of residents of the capital are going to get a long break of three consecutive days. This conference will be held from 11 to 13 September 2026 at the prestigious Bharat Mandapam located at Pragati Maidan, in which top leaders, heads of state and global representatives from about 30 member countries and partner nations will participate. 3 consecutive days holiday: Delhiites will get a long weekend. Delhiites are going to get a mini vacation like atmosphere in the second week of September. According to the official order issued by the government, all central government offices, administrative offices of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD), autonomous bodies and public sector undertakings (PSUs) located in Delhi and New Delhi region will remain completely closed on September 11. After this holiday on Friday, there will be no government work for three consecutive days due to the regular holiday of Saturday and Sunday. The government believes that by keeping the offices closed on working days, the pressure of public vehicles on the roads will be reduced to a great extent, which will ease the operation of motorcades of foreign diplomats, heads of state and VVIP delegations and the city residents will also not have to face the huge traffic jams. What will remain closed: Know on which institutions the holiday will be applicable. The scope of this order of the government will be widely applicable to the administrative system of New Delhi and Central Delhi. Major services and institutions that will remain closed on September 11 include: All central government offices: Central offices of all ministries and departments located in Delhi, including North Block, South Block, Shastri Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan and CGO Complex, will remain completely closed. Administrative Departments of Delhi Government: Delhi Secretariat, various directorates, administrative offices of the Municipal Corporation (MCD) and all autonomous bodies subordinate to the Delhi Government will remain closed. Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs): Holiday will also be applicable in corporate and regional offices of government companies and undertakings located in Delhi-NCR. Government educational institutions: Government-aided schools and colleges may remain closed due to safety protocols and movement restrictions, for which separate guidelines are being issued by the Directorate of Education. Registry and RTO services: Public service centers related to vehicle registration, driving license test and property registry will remain closed from September 11 to September 13. Which services will remain fully operational: There will be no inconvenience to the general public. During this three-day holiday, essential and emergency services related to the daily life of common citizens have been completely exempted. Delhi Administration and Police have ensured that there is no disruption in normal life: Hospitals and Health Services: All major government and private hospitals, trauma centers and emergency wards of Delhi including AIIMS, Safdarjung, RML, GTB and Lok Nayak (LNJP) will remain fully operational 24 hours. Special green corridors and unrestricted routes will be available for ambulance services. Delhi Metro Rail (DMRC): Delhi Metro network will continue its regular services on all major lines as the lifeline of the city. However, due to security reasons, temporary exit control may be imposed at some gates of stations such as 'Supreme Court' adjacent to Bharat Mandapam and select stations in Lutyens' Delhi. Medicine and grocery shops: Medical stores, milk booths, supermarkets, fruit-vegetable and general grocery retail shops located in local markets will remain open as usual. Fire brigade, electricity and water supply: Delhi Jal Board, BSES, NDPL and emergency control rooms of fire department will continue to function without any interruption. Airport and Railway Connectivity: Connectivity to New Delhi, Old Delhi, Anand Vihar and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations and Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport will remain smooth, provided passengers carry their valid travel tickets. World's top leadership will gather in Bharat Mandapam: VVIP security will be tightly guarded. India has the chairmanship of BRICS for the year 2026, the theme of which has been 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'. Top leaders of newly included member countries including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and more than 30 global partner countries are coming to participate in this 18th summit. 10 major luxury hotels in Central Delhi and South Delhi (Saket) have been identified for the stay of foreign guests. Most of the foreign delegations will reach Indira Gandhi International Airport on September 11. During this period, security convoys will pass continuously from the airport to hotels and Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan. To ensure that there is no lapse in security and that the movement of foreign guests remains uninterrupted, Delhi Police has deployed more than 4,800 additional personnel. Traffic advisories and diversions on 22 major corridors Delhi Traffic Police has prepared a detailed traffic management plan for the conference. Entry of heavy vehicles and commercial vehicles will be restricted on at least 22 major routes of New Delhi, Central Delhi, South Delhi and South-West Delhi. Traffic may be stopped for some time during VVIP movement on Sardar Patel Marg, Shanti Path, Teen Murti Marg, Mathura Road, Bhairon Marg, Subramaniam Bharati Marg, Ring Road (Sarai Kale Khan to Moti Bagh) and roads around India Gate. Heavy trucks coming from outside states will be diverted towards the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways. Those planning to go to the airport or railway station are strongly advised to use the Airport Express Line of Delhi Metro instead of private cabs or personal cars. Citizens should complete important government work before September 11. In view of three consecutive days of government holiday, it is very important for the general public and businessmen to complete their important administrative work before time. If any important work related to your bank, tax, passport office, Aadhaar center, municipal corporation or court is pending, then it is mandatory to complete it by the evening of 10th September (Thursday). There will be complete suspension of public work in Delhi Government and Central Government offices from 11th to 13th September, and regular work will be resumed only from 14th September (Monday).
