Big blow on women’s reservation! 131st Constitution Amendment Bill passed in Lok Sabha, 298 votes in support and 230 against.
Tezzbuzz Desk – Voting took place in the Lok Sabha after a long debate on the Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill, 2026 related to women’s reservation, but this bill could not be passed. When voting was held after about 21 hours of discussion, the bill did not get the required two-thirds majority.
Bill stuck in voting
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla informed the House that a total of 489 MPs voted on the proposal to consider the amendment.
- Votes in favor: 298
- Votes in opposition: 230
Being a constitutional amendment, at least two-thirds majority i.e. 326 votes was required to pass the bill. But this bill could not be passed due to lack of 28 votes.
Further discussion halted
After the voting, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju announced that the Delimitation Bill, 2026 and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 will not be discussed further.
He also said that the government is committed to empowering women and will continue efforts in future also.
130 MPs involved in long debate
This important bill was discussed in the House for a total of 21 hours, in which 130 MPs participated. These included 56 women MPs, which shows the seriousness and importance of this issue.
Political accusations intensify
During the debate, Union Home Minister Amit Shah targeted the opposition and said that if the opposition does not support, the bill will not be passed and the women of the country will understand who is standing in the way of their rights.
historical situation
This is believed to be the first time in the last 11 years that the Central Government could not pass any major bill in the Lok Sabha. This development has sparked a new debate in political circles.
House adjourned
After voting and announcement, the proceedings of the Lok Sabha were adjourned till 11 am the next day.
