Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced a new tariff policy regarding imported generic medicines. He said that from August 1, 2026, zero duty will be applicable on all generic medicines coming into America for the first two years. After this, 100 percent fee will be imposed for one year and then 200 percent fee.
President Trump, in his message shared on the social media platform Truth Social, said that the main objective of this policy is to promote drug manufacturing within America and encourage companies to produce locally.
Emphasis on increasing production in America
Trump said that actions like fines will also be taken against those companies which do not set up their production plants and necessary equipment in America within the stipulated time frame.
He also clarified that this new policy will apply only to generic medicines. There will be no change in the existing policy for patented, branded and innovative medicines.
India’s pharmaceutical exports may be affected
This decision of America is considered important for India, because India is known worldwide as the “Pharmacy of the World” and is the largest exporter of generic medicines to America.
According to the report of Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), India will export medicines worth $9.7 billion to the US in 2025. This accounted for about 38 percent of India’s total global pharmaceutical exports of $25.8 billion.
Experts believe that if this policy is implemented as per the schedule, it may have an impact on India’s pharmaceutical exports and industry.
