Visakhapatnam Steel Plant : A terrible accident has occurred in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh. The incident occurred while the plant was lifting a large amount of boiling liquid steel (molten iron). So far nine workers have died in this terrible accident. Other workers were also severely burned.
According to preliminary information, the accident occurred when a crane was lifting boiling liquid steel in the SMS-2 and STC-3 heat treatment units of the steel plant. According to reports, a ladle (large pot) containing a metallic liquid boiling at an extremely high temperature of around 1,500 degrees Celsius suddenly moved uncontrollably, causing the boiling hot steel to fall on the workers. Workers fled in panic as the liquid steel spilled. Firefighters at the steel plant are trying to put out the fire.

State Home Minister Vangalpudi Anita reacts to the accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. He spoke to the Collector and City Police Commissioner over phone and inquired about the steel plant accident. According to the Home Minister’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), he directed the officials to arrange the best treatment for the injured and speed up rescue and relief operations at the accident site. On getting information about the incident, the Home Minister immediately reached the accident spot and is continuously communicating with the authorities on phone and giving them various instructions.

Labor union leader N. Ayodhyaram said, “We suspect that the fire may have been caused by an explosion, but a thorough investigation is required to ascertain the exact cause. It is not yet clear whether the deceased were contract workers or permanent employees of the steel plant.”
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief and condolence over the accident. He spoke directly to the officials at the scene over the phone and condoled the deaths. The officials briefed the Chief Minister about the current situation and ongoing relief operations. The Chief Minister directed that all government departments should work together to ensure speedy and efficient rescue and relief work.
