Big political upheaval in West Bengal, Governor dissolved the assembly, decision taken after Mamata did not resign
Tezzbuzz Desk – A major development was seen in the politics of West Bengal on Thursday, when Governor RN Ravi issued the order to dissolve the 17th Assembly. This step has been taken in view of the 2026 assembly election results and political situation.
The Governor issued this order in exercise of the powers received under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution of India. A special gazette notification (Notification No: 275-PA/1L-03/2026) was also published in this regard on 6 May 2026. According to this, the West Bengal Assembly will be formally dissolved from 7 May 2026.
Current term ends with dissolution of assembly
As per government instructions, the tenure of the present 17th Assembly has ended and now the way has been paved for the formation of the 18th Assembly. The order was signed by state Chief Secretary Dushyanta Nariyala (IAS) and was issued in public interest.
Dissolving the Assembly before the formation of a new government following election results is generally considered a constitutional process. This step has been taken under this tradition.
Election results and political situation
In the recently held assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has won 207 out of 293 seats, putting the BJP in a position to form the government for the first time in the state. At the same time, Mamata Banerjee’s party had to face a crushing defeat.
After the election results, Mamata Banerjee had refused to resign from the post of Chief Minister, alleging “vote theft” on several seats. After this, a situation of political deadlock was created, amid which the decision to dissolve the assembly came to the fore.
The process of forming a new government begins
Now the process of forming a new government in the state has intensified. BJP has called a meeting of its MLAs, in which the leader of the legislature party will be selected. It is being told that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also reaching Kolkata and will monitor the entire strategy.
According to sources, the swearing-in ceremony of the new government may be held on May 9 at the Brigade Ground in Kolkata. The Prime Minister, Home Minister and many Chief Ministers of BJP ruled states can attend this grand program.
Strict security arrangements are being made for the swearing-in ceremony. SPG and Kolkata Police will be deployed at the venue, while central security forces will be deployed outside the Brigade grounds.
