Old Monk Ban In Maharashtra : Those who are fond of Old Monk in Maharashtra have received a big blow from the Bombay High Court. The Bombay High Court has categorically refused to lift the temporary ban imposed in Maharashtra on the sale of Old Monk. During the hearing, senior advocate Navroz Seerwai, representing the company, submitted three revised product labels before the court. He said the company has submitted these labels to explore possible solutions without relinquishing any rights. If both parties accept these changes, the company is ready to do so, but if there is any opposition, the changes can be withdrawn.
Next hearing on September 8
Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, representing the central government and FSSAI, sought time from the court to get instructions on these revised labels. The next hearing in this case will be held on September 8, 2026 in the 'Urgent Supplemental Board'. But the court refused to grant interim relief to the company this time.
What was the demand of the company?
The company had sought a stay on FSSAI's order and permission to sell self-produced rum till the final hearing of the matter.
The High Court said that granting such an interim order at this stage would be tantamount to granting final relief.
The court also noted that both the parties are already presenting detailed arguments regarding the final settlement of the case.
The court said that in such circumstances it would not be appropriate to allow the company to sell rum at an interim stage.
Why was Old Monk banned?
The FSSAI ordered a ban on the sale of 'Old Monk' after inspecting the company's manufacturing plant at Khopoli in Maharashtra's Raigad district, sparking the controversy. FSSAI said that the company's product was exogenously flavored with rum, but the label of the product did not clearly mention 'flavoured rum'. On this basis, the food regulatory body banned its sale in Maharashtra.
