Shillong : The possibility of a major political upheaval has arisen in the politics of Meghalaya. There has been talk of a sudden increase in the number of the BJP, which currently has only two MLAs in the 60-member state assembly. It is claimed that 9 MLAs of United Democratic Party i.e. UDP and 4 of Trinamool Congress are in touch with BJP. If these 13 MLAs join the BJP, the party's assembly membership can directly reach 15. Political sources have revealed that 13 existing MLAs from Meghalaya are preparing to join the BJP. It is said that 9 MLAs of UDP and 4 of TMC are included in this. Interestingly, TMC's potential group includes former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma's name is also in discussion.

Discontent in UDP after cabinet reshuffle
The UDP is currently part of the National People's Party-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government. However, after the cabinet reshuffle in September 2025, it is being said that resentment within the party has increased.
Internal differences within the UDP came under the spotlight after party president Metbah Lyngdoh replaced Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh in the cabinet. This factionalism in the party is considered important in the background of the upcoming 2028 assembly elections.
However, UDP sources have not taken a clear stand on the possibility of joining the BJP. A senior party leader has said that if there is a split in the party and the requisite number is available as per the norms of the anti-defection law, it will be difficult to stop the MLAs.
Discussion hints from BJP
Meanwhile, a senior Meghalaya BJP leader has also hinted that discussions with MLAs are on. It is said that the state BJP has invited the UDP MLAs for the discussion. However, now it is being claimed that the concerned MLA is directly discussing with the central leadership.
BJP has not yet officially announced the joining of any MLA. Therefore, the BJP is taking a stand that it will not be appropriate to make any concrete predictions until the final decision is taken.

At present BJP has two MLAs
Alexander Lalu Hek and Sanbor Shullai of BJP currently have two MLAs in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Sanbor Shullai is a Cabinet Minister in the state government.
If the 13 MLAs in question join the BJP, the party's strength may increase from two to 15 MLAs. Hence, it is likely to have a major impact on the power equation in Meghalaya.
