Big update for those visiting Nainital, new traffic system will be implemented on weekends

New Delhi As soon as the name of traveling in the mountains comes to people's mind, the picture of beautiful places like Nainital, Bhimtal and Kainchidham comes to the fore. But sometimes it becomes difficult to reach these places during holidays and weekends. Due to long queues of vehicles on the roads, tourists spend a lot of time in traffic jams. Now to reduce this problem, Nainital Police has started new preparations. Let us tell you that a plan is being made to implement one-way slot system in Nainital district during the tourist season and weekends.

This system will be used when the number of vehicles on the roads exceeds the capacity. The aim of the police is to improve the movement of tourists and reduce the jams on the roads of major tourist places.

New system will be adopted

This time Nainital Police is studying the methods used in tourist cities like Mussoorie and Shimla to make changes in the traffic system. Based on this, a new plan will be prepared considering the pressure on local roads and vehicles. People going towards Nainital, Bhimtal, Bhawali and Kainchidham can get maximum benefit from it. Due to sudden increase in the number of vehicles in these areas during holidays, traffic on Haldwani and surrounding roads is also affected. However, the one-way slot system will not be in place all the time. According to the police, it will be used only when necessary.

More than 12 lakh tourists arrived till August

The continuously increasing number of tourists in Nainital is also becoming a big challenge for the traffic system. According to the data of the Tourism Department, 12,12,196 tourists have reached the district till August 2026. Of these, more than 6 lakh tourists came only in May and June. If we look at the figures of the last few years, about 3 lakh tourists had reached Nainital in 2021. After this, 5 lakh tourists came in 2022, 7 lakh in 2023 and about 10 lakh tourists in 2024.

At the same time, in 2025 this number had crossed 13 lakhs. In view of the increasing number of tourists, the police now want to prepare a better and longer lasting traffic system.

Consideration of online registration

Meanwhile, new arrangements are also being considered to handle the increasing crowd of devotees in the famous Kainchidham temple. The administration is looking at the possibility of providing darshan facility to the devotees at different times on the basis of online registration. If this system is implemented then the problems caused by the arrival of a large number of devotees and vehicles at the same time will be reduced. At present, no final decision has been taken regarding online registration.
