Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday passed a 10-point resolution regarding Vande Mataram. In this, the party accused Congress of doing politics regarding the national song and taking decisions under the pressure of vote bank. BJP opposed the decision of Congress Working Committee (CWC) of August 19, 2026 in which the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram were sung in Congress programs while re-accepting the 1937 resolution.
BJP in the resolution stressed on maintaining the historical legacy and respect of the full version of Vande Mataram. The party also referred to Mahatma Gandhi's statement in which he described it as an anti-imperialist call and linked to pure national sentiments. BJP said the national anthem should not be limited for political convenience or appeasement.

BJP attacked Congress
Regarding the decision of the Congress Working Committee, BJP said that it is not appropriate to limit Vande Mataram on the basis of the 1937 resolution. According to the party, the entire Vande Mataram is an important symbol associated with the country's national consciousness and freedom movement. In the resolution, BJP said that the old proposal of any political party cannot be above the country's constitution and the law made by the Parliament. The party challenged the Congress's decision on this basis.

In the resolution, BJP referred to the 1950 declaration of the Constituent Assembly that Vande Mataram was given the status of national song. Besides, the amendment passed in Parliament in 2026 was also cited in which it has been said that the national song will be given the same legal protection as the national anthem. The party said that Vande Mataram cannot be limited on the basis of communal pressure, political appeasement or narrow vote bank politics. BJP also talked about placing before the public the historical and political context of the controversy that arose over Vande Mataram in 1937.
Reference to Mahatma Gandhi's thoughts and history
BJP also talked about making the statement of Mahatma Gandhi a part of its campaign in which he had called Vande Mataram as an anti-imperialist call. The party will now spread its history, meaning and national importance to the people across the country through its workers.
