BJP MLA Raju Singh sent to 4 years jail, MLA also sent to jail; Female doctor killed in harsh firing

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has sentenced BJP MLA Raju Kumar Singh from Sahebganj, Bihar to four years in the Harsh firing case during the New Year party of 2018-19. The court convicted him under Section 304 Part-II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act. Besides, an order has also been given to give compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the victim’s family.

Sentenced to more than two years, also lost his MLA

According to the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, if an MP or MLA is sentenced to a prison term of two years or more in a criminal case, he becomes ineligible for membership of the House from the date of conviction. In such a situation, Raju Kumar Singh’s assembly membership has also ended.

Doctor Archana Gupta lost her life in Harsh firing

The case pertains to a New Year party organized on the intervening night of 31 December 2018 and 1 January 2019. It is alleged that Dr. Archana Gupta was shot in the joyous firing during the celebration, due to which she died. During the investigation, arms and ammunition were also recovered from Raju Kumar Singh.

Court’s strict comment

While delivering the verdict, the court said that reckless firing has become a serious social problem in the country and such negligence is taking the lives of innocent people. The court accepted that Dr. Archana Gupta died due to the negligence of the accused. The prosecution argued that this case is serious because the one who made the law became the one who broke the law.

Raju Kumar Singh has been an MLA from many parties.

Raju Kumar Singh has been elected MLA several times since 2005. He won the election on the ticket of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Janata Dal (United), VIP and later Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He has also held the responsibility of Tourism Minister in Bihar Government.
