Bureau Prayagraj. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is trying to strengthen its hold in Tamil Nadu, has suffered a major setback. Despite contesting on 27 seats under the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the party managed to win only one seat.
BJP formed an alliance with AIADMK in April 2025 and entered the 2026 assembly elections with more seats than in 2021. On the strength of its better performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the deployment of senior leaders in key constituencies, the party hoped that it would be able to translate its organizational strength into electoral gains, however this strategy did not prove effective at the ground level.
In this election Nainar Nagendran, L. Many prominent leaders including Murugan, Tamilisai Soundararajan and Vanathi Srinivasan have faced defeat. His defeat has intensified internal scrutiny within the party and raised questions over the leadership strategy and execution of the election campaign.
The party’s allies also failed to make an electoral impact. G.K. The Vasan-led Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) lost all five seats it contested under the coalition arrangement. Other smaller allies also could not translate their presence into victory, reflecting the broader failure of the alliance’s vote transfer system.
An important reason for the BJP’s poor performance was the rise of actor-politician Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), which disrupted the traditional voting pattern.
