New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party has started its preparations for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2027 by handing over a major responsibility to senior leader Vinod Tawde. The Rajya Sabha MP and BJP national general secretary has been appointed as the party's Uttar Pradesh in-charge, putting him at the center of the BJP's election strategy for India's most politically important state.
Along with Vinod Tawde, BJP national secretary Jagdish Ishwarbhai Patel has been appointed as the co-in-charge of Uttar Pradesh. The appointments were announced soon after BJP president Nitin Nabin completed a major organizational reshuffle and unveiled the party's new team of national office-bearers.
The move highlights the BJP's focus on strengthening its election machinery, improving booth-level management and building a coordinated campaign strategy well ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
BJP Places Experienced Organizer At Center Of UP Battle
Vinod Tawde's appointment is being seen as a strategic move by the BJP as the party prepares for a challenging electoral battle in Uttar Pradesh. Tawde has built a reputation within the BJP as an organization-focused leader with experience in election planning, cadre management and political coordination.
His role will include strengthening the party network, improving communication between leaders and workers, and ensuring better coordination between the BJP central leadership and the Uttar Pradesh unit. The Uttar Pradesh assignment is considered one of the biggest organizational responsibilities in the BJP because the state plays a decisive role in national politics.
Uttar Pradesh remains the center of Indian electoral politics with 80 Lok Sabha seats and 403 Assembly constituencies. BJP faced a major setback in the state during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when its seat tally declined from 64 seats in 2019 to 33. The party also lost the Faizabad-Ayodhya Lok Sabha seat, which had significant political importance after the Ram Mandir movement.
The upcoming 2027 Assembly elections will be crucial for the BJP as it seeks a third consecutive term under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The party's latest organizational decision indicates that it has started preparing early to strengthen its ground presence and counter opposition strategies.
Vinod Tawde's Political Journey
A leader from Maharashtra and belonging to the OBC community, Vinod Tawde rose through the BJP's organizational structure before becoming a prominent political figure.
He was elected MLA in Maharashtra in 2014 and served in the Devendra Fadnavis government, handling several important portfolios including school education, higher and technical education, medical education, sports and youth welfare, parliamentary affairs and cultural affairs.
After not receiving a ticket in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Tawde shifted his focus towards national organizational responsibilities and emerged as one of the BJP's important election strategists. His experience in managing political campaigns and organizational activities has made him a key figure within the party.
Before receiving charge of Uttar Pradesh, Vinod Tawde served as BJP's Bihar in-charge, where he played an important role in election coordination and organizational management. During his Bihar assignment, Tawde worked on strengthening party coordination, alliance management and election planning. His experience in Bihar is considered one of the reasons behind his selection for the politically sensitive Uttar Pradesh assignment.
Tawde has also handled organizational responsibilities in states including Gujarat, West Bengal, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Delhi. He has served as a BJP observer during important political decisions, including chief ministerial selection processes in Tripura and Rajasthan.
BJP's Focus On Booth Strategy And Ground Network
The biggest challenge before Vinod Tawde will be strengthening the BJP's election structure from the grassroots level. The party is expected to focus on booth management, voter outreach programs, worker mobilization and coordination between local leaders and the state leadership.
With opposition parties increasing their focus on social alliances and regional issues, the BJP will look to improve its organizational presence across western Uttar Pradesh, central UP and Purvanchal. Tawde's experience in managing different political groups is expected to help the party maintain coordination among various factions.
The organizational reshuffle of the saffron party also reflects its focus on maintaining caste and regional balance in Uttar Pradesh. The party has given representation to leaders from OBC, Dalit, women and minority communities as part of its broader social outreach strategy.
Political observers believe the BJP's emphasis on OBC leaders is aimed at countering the Samajwadi Party's PDA strategy, which focuses on backward classes, Dalits and minorities. The party is attempting to strengthen its support base among different social groups before the 2027 Assembly elections.
BJP's new national team includes several leaders from Uttar Pradesh who have received important responsibilities. Former Union Minister Smriti Irani has been appointed national general secretary. Irani, who lost the Amethi Lok Sabha election in 2024, continues to remain an important face in the party organisation.
Former MP Harish Dwivedi has also been appointed national general secretary. Rekha Verma, a Kurmi leader and two-time MLA, has received the responsibility of BJP national vice president.
Amarpal Maurya, an OBC leader considered close to Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, has been appointed to lead the BJP's OBC Morcha. Bulandshahr MP Bhola Singh and Sanjeeta Yadav have also been given national responsibilities.
BJP's Minority Outreach Strategy In UP
BJP has also included Muslim leaders from Uttar Pradesh in key organizational roles. Tariq Mansoor, former Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, has been appointed BJP national vice president. Kunwar Basit Ali from Meerut has been given responsibility as the head of the BJP Minority Morcha. The appointments indicate the party's attempt to expand its organizational reach among different communities ahead of the 2027 election battle.
Vinod Tawde's new role will go beyond election campaigning. He will be responsible for preparing the BJP organization for one of the most closely watched Assembly elections in India. His immediate priorities are expected to include strengthening booth-level networks, improving coordination between party workers and leaders, managing internal equations and preparing an effective election roadmap.
For BJP, Uttar Pradesh remains a key state for its national political strategy. By assigning an experienced organizer like Vinod Tawde, the party has signaled that its Mission 2027 has officially begun.
