Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has spent much of its anime run expanding material that Tite Kubo could not fully explore in the original manga, but Episode 5 of The Calamity may be one of its boldest departures yet.
Titled “DEFEND YOU” and numbered Episode 45 overall, the August 22 episode dramatically expands Ichigo Kurosaki’s confrontation with Yhwach. While Ichigo’s new Blood Chains form has become an obvious talking point, another major change has caught fans’ attention: Orihime Inoue is no longer simply standing beside Ichigo during the final battle, the anime places her directly at the emotional centre of it.

How Does Bleach TYBW Episode 5 Change Orihime’s Manga Role?
Orihime was with Ichigo when he faced Yhwach in the manga, using her defensive powers to help out Ichigo. In the anime, Orihime has received a lot more content during the confrontation with Yhwach. It has already been happening before during the last cour, but Episode 5 takes it to an entirely different level.
Instead of showing her as nothing more than a supporter of Ichigo who leads the battle, the episode “DEFEND YOU” lets her connection to Ichigo, her defensive powers, and her bravery when confronting Yhwach become a big part of the episode’s conflict.
It is quite important to note that the events taking place during the prolonged battle between Ichigo and Yhwach don’t happen the same way in the manga. The episode itself is mostly filled with newly written content. Even manga fans have trouble recognizing the sequence.
Yhwach Targets Orihime As Ichigo’s Weakness
The importance of the episode is in how Yhwach makes the fight personal by going after Orihime. Yhwach recognizes Orihime’s importance in Ichigo’s life and uses the connection to manipulate him in what had been a power struggle. The choice of Yhwach is also important as it gives Orihime something that fans have been craving for some time now – an opportunity to participate in the fight herself.
Orihime does not just need Ichigo’s protection but uses her skills as the situation gets worse and worse. The fan reaction to the episode was largely positive for the character of Orihime, especially among the audience that perceived Orihime as a damsel in distress before.
Did Bleach TYBW Episode 5 Kill Orihime?
It is perhaps the most shocking event in this episode that comes at the very end of the episode. It looks like Orihime performs an amazing act of sacrifice while facing off against Yhwach, taking Bleach into events that were never seen in the original manga. This event has obviously raised a question about whether Bleach is changing the fate of Orihime for good or it just shows the viewers something that is related to the power of perceiving and creating alternate future realities that belong to Yhwach.
At least, for now, the latter explanation should be preferred. There is no need to talk about the death of Orihime at the moment when Bleach is still dealing with The Almighty and rewrites the path of the manga.
Why Orihime’s Episode 5 Moment Matters
Orihime has been among the most controversial characters of Bleach for many years now. The powers that she wields in the anime are unique compared to those of other characters in the show since her healing skills do not merely heal but reject occurrences surrounding a particular character, thereby placing her among the rare few who have the power to heal damage that cannot be undone by most other characters.
Indeed, Episode 5 has given this skill the appropriate battle setting so as to justify her importance, considering the significance of her power. Even the uncredited ending that was aired after the episode emphasizes this point as her final scene is what it centers on.
Episode 5 Is One Of Bleach TYBW’s Biggest Manga Departures Yet
Orihime isn’t the only character bringing manga fans to the table. This episode has expanded the fight between Ichigo and Yhwach, provided some opportunity for Ichigo to utilize his Bankai-based abilities, and introduced the Blood Chain form – content which was not in the original ending of the manga.
This is consistent with the promise made by creator Tite Kubo that the final cour would have even more original content than what came before it. It has created an episode where even those who completed the manga years ago cannot anticipate everything that will happen.
And especially for Orihime, this could be one of her most pivotal moments in the Bleach anime series.
