Mumbai: Security has been tightened after an email threatening to bomb the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s office, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, and other key locations in the city was received. Police, bomb disposal squad, and fire brigade teams conducted extensive searches at all the key locations mentioned in the email, but no suspicious object or explosive material was found. The cyber police team is investigating the matter.
A police official said the threatening email was sent to the mayor’s official email ID at around 9:21 a.m. The email also mentioned the mayor’s official vehicle and office cabin, the Mumbai Metro, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSC), the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters, and several other offices, threatening an attack before August 15. The email also contained pro-Khalistan slogans and names of individuals. It also warned parents not to send their children to school and cautioned people against traveling by metro.
The caller claimed that IEDs would be detonated at the mayor’s office and the BMC at 1:11 p.m., the chief minister’s office at 2:11 p.m., and several BMC offices at 3:11 p.m., with the aim of harming the Indian economy. This is the third threatening email received by the mayor’s office in the past few months.
After receiving this message, Mumbai Police issued a security alert. Teams from the police, fire brigade, and bomb detection and disposal squad conducted a thorough search of all sensitive locations, including the BMC headquarters. Some buildings were also evacuated as a precaution. No explosives or suspicious material were recovered during the search.
