Bonalu: The great festival of living heritage of Telangana
Hyderabad. These days, the flavor of Bonalu Festival, which has become the cultural identity of Telangana, is being seen in the entire state, especially in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. This traditional festival dedicated to Mother Mahakali is not just a religious ritual but a grand celebration of folk culture, music, dance and community unity. Celebrated in the month of Ashadha, this festival attracts thousands of devotees with its unique traditions and colorful events.
The streets of the historic Lal Darwaza area of Hyderabad were drenched in devotional atmosphere, traditional music and colorful tableaux. There was a huge crowd of devotees since morning for darshan and worship at Sri Singhavahini Mahakali Temple and Akkanna Madanna Temple. In this festival celebrated on the third Sunday of the month of Ashadh, thousands of devotees offered Bonam to Mother Mahakali and prayed for the happiness, prosperity and health of the family.
What is the tradition of Bonam?
The word Bonalu is derived from the Telugu word ‘Bonam’, which means a vessel filled with food or offerings. The most important tradition of this festival is offering Bonam. Women dressed in traditional clothes and traditional jewelery take out processions to the temples carrying decorated Kalash on their heads. Cooked rice, milk, jaggery, curd and other offerings are kept in these Kalash, which are dedicated to Mother Mahakali.
According to the devotees, this offering is a symbol of expressing gratitude towards the Goddess as well as a prayer to keep the family and society safe from diseases, epidemics and other adversities. This is why Bonalu is not just a religious ritual but is considered an important celebration of folk faith and social belief.
Glimpse of folk culture seen in processions
The biggest identity of Bonalu is its grand processions. The sound of traditional drums, tunes of folk instruments, processions decorated with flowers and colorful decorations make the entire atmosphere devotional. The energetic traditional dance of Poturaju, Puli Vesham (folk dance performed in the form of a tiger) and other cultural performances remain the center of attraction during the processions.
Special worship in temples
Special pujas, abhishekas, bhajan-kirtans and religious rituals were conducted at Sri Ujjaini Mahakali Temple, Lal Darwaza Mahakali Temple, Sri Singhavahini Mahakali Temple and other major Shaktipeeths in Hyderabad. Temples were decorated with flowers and attractive lights and devotees prayed to Goddess Mahakali for happiness, peace and prosperity.
