There are plenty of Bourbon biscuits to choose from, including supermarket own-brands and branded options. They can range widely in price and quality, so I decided to put a selection of bourbon biscuits to the test. I compared biscuits from Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Marks and Spencer against McVitie’s.
Aldi – 64p for 300g packet
At the bottom of my rankings is Aldi. The packet was among the largest in my taste test, but I found the biscuits too firm and lacking in flavour. They are a different shape from the brand and many others. I thought the biscuit was too firm and crunchy, and didn’t have much cream. As a result, it was clear it would come in last place.
Sainsbury’s – 43p for 200g packet
Next came Sainsbury’s, as these biscuits were also too firm for my liking. It did have more cream and was a darker colour than the brand. For me, the texture let it down.
Lidl – 43p for 200g packet
Lidl’s biscuits were much better than Aldi’s and Sainsbury’s. They had the classic shape, and despite being on the firm side, the flavour was much stronger and more classically Bourbon than the others. It did taste slightly dry at times, so I lost some points for that.
Asda – 70p for 300g packet
Asda’s biscuits had a nice crumbly texture once bitten into. It looked identical to the branded Bourbon biscuit and had an ideal level of cream. These are a staple choice if you are after a classic Bourbon biscuit.
McVitie’s – £1.14 for 300g packet
The branded biscuits are well-loved for a reason. It had a pleasant crunch with the soft filling inside tasting chocolaty and not overpowering. You can’t go wrong with the McVitie’s biscuit.
Marks and Spencer – 50p for 165g packet
If you are a fan of the cream filling in a Bourbon, Marks and Spencer’s biscuit will win you over. It has a much thicker layer of cream than the others, and it was so smooth and soft to the taste. It was chocolatey, not sickly, and had a nice crunch that wasn’t too firm. Choose these if the cream is your favourite part of a bourbon, and you won’t be disappointed. The only downside is that this packet is the smallest.
Tesco – 63p for 296g packet
Coming in joint first place is Tesco. I thought these biscuits were even better than the brand and looked the most similar. It didn’t have too much cream but still provided a sweet, chocolaty filling. The biscuit has the perfect texture, neither too firm nor too crumbly. To me, it tasted classically like a Bourbon and is the perfect choice if you are after a biscuit that isn’t overly filled with cream.
