Before heading to Glasgow, experts predicted that India would not win as many medals as before because the number of medal-winning sports had been reduced. But that wasn’t the case; instead, India’s athletes performed a remarkable feat this time.
Experts had fears
Experts had feared that India would be at the bottom of the medal table due to the absence of sports like shooting, badminton, and wrestling. However, the strong performances of India’s boxing, judo, para-athletes, athletics, and weightlifting athletes have led to a stellar haul of gold medals for India. This time, 122 players from the Indian team participated in 10 sports.
Boxers Exceeded Expectations
A team of 14 boxers (7 men and 7 women) departed for Glasgow. Surprisingly, even the Indian Boxing Federation (BOF) expected only three gold medals this time. However, when 10 of the 14 Indian boxers advanced to the semi-finals, Boxing Federation General Secretary Pramod Chaudhary announced in an exclusive interview with NDTV that all 10 Indian boxers would compete in the finals, and that’s exactly what happened. Women Won 6 Medals
Indian women boxers won five gold medals and one silver medal. Preeti Pawar, Jasmine, Sakshi, Priya Ghanghas, and Arundhati Chaudhary delivered a golden punch, winning a historic five gold medals. Meanwhile, Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain of Assam won her first Commonwealth Games silver medal.
Men won 4 medals
In the men’s category, India won 2 gold and 2 silver medals. Sachin and Ankush won gold medals, while Jadumani and Narendra won silver medals.
