Brad Pitt set to return for ‘World War Z’ sequel after 13 years

Brad Pitt is heading back into the zombie apocalypse more than a decade after World War Z became a global box-office success.

Pitt is set to reprise his role in a sequel to the 2013 Paramount Pictures blockbuster, with Edward Berger, director of Conclave and All Quiet on the Western Frontattached to direct.

The upcoming film will continue the story established in the original movie, which was based on Max Brooks’ 2006 novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War. Plot details remain under wraps, and casting beyond Pitt has not yet been announced.

Dennis Kelly, whose credits include Matilda: The Musical and Togetherwill write the screenplay. Pitt will also produce through Plan B Entertainment alongside Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.

The sequel will mark Pitt and Berger’s second collaboration. The pair previously worked on the upcoming A24 film The Riderswhich they filmed earlier this year.

Released in 2013, World War Z earned more than $540 million worldwide and ranked as the 12th-highest-grossing film of that year at the domestic box office.

Pitt starred as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations employee investigating a rapidly spreading zombie outbreak.

The new project comes as Pitt promotes Heart of the Beasthis upcoming survival adventure directed by David Ayer.

The film arrives in cinemas Sept. 25, while Pitt will also return as Cliff Booth in The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth this fall.
