Presence of crocodiles increases concern
A large number of salt water crocodiles have been reported around the Fitzroy River. In some reports their number is said to be around 500. However, local crocodile expert John Lever questioned this figure, saying that the actual number could be much lower. According to him, the threat regarding the presence of crocodiles in the Rockhampton area has been exaggerated.
Nevertheless, safety protocols are already in place in case a crocodile is spotted in the river. Even in local rowing competitions, there is a system to stop the race and assess the situation if a crocodile is spotted. This means that even during the Olympics, special monitoring and emergency arrangements will be an important part of the players' safety.
